SENTENCE ADVERBS
They are called sentence adverbs and they act as a comment.
Compared with the fact that an adverb typically modifies the verb of a sentence, a sentence adverb is an adverb that appears usually at the beginning of a sentence and modifies the sentence as a whole.
This type of adverb usually ends in –ly and is often followed by a comma, but the main characteristic is the modiying quality of the whole sentence.
USES
Are used to convey the writer or speaker's opinion that it is clear/sad/curious that something happened
-He spoke clearly and with conviction.(= He spoke in a clear way and with conviction.)
-She smiled sadly. (= She smiled in a sad way.)
-He spoke clearly and with conviction.(= He spoke in a clear way and with conviction.)
-She smiled sadly. (= She smiled in a sad way.)
LANGUAGE IN CONTEXT
While my friends an I were watching a movie at home, the lights went out. Unfortunately, no one knew how the movie ended. So, we took turns telling our own endings.
